Javed Hashmi

Makhdoom Muhammad Javed Hashmi was born on the first of January 1948 in the city of Lahore in the province of Pakistan. He obtained his education from the Punjab University and graduated with both Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Science and a Master’s degree in Philosophy.

Javed Hashmi began his political carrier in the year 1985 when he joined the Pakistan Muslim League – Nawaz. He was very successful as he was appointed the Minister of State for Youth Affairs from 1990 till 1993. Moreover he also served as the Federal Minister for Health from 1997 till 1999 during the time when Nawaz Sharif was Prime Minister for the second time.

In the general elections of 2008, he ran from three constituencies (Multan, Rawalpindi and Lahore) and won all of them. Surprisingly he declined the oath and thus could not be a part of the cabinet of Nawaz Sharif.

He soon left the PML-N and joined the Pakistan Tehreek-e- Insaf from late December 2004. His main motive to change parties was to bring a change to Pakistan. Till date he is an active member of the PTI and has now been elevated to being the President of the PTI. In the general elections of 2013 he represented the PTI and won national assembly tickets from both Islamabad and Multan.

There was a difference in opinion between Makhdoom Javed Hashmi and Imran Khan over the protests and sit-ins in Islamabad, against the alleged rigging in the last general elections. On 31st August 2014, Javed Hashmi visibly seemed irritated by some of Imran Khan’s decisions and left the side of Imran Khan. He left the party and resigned from the National Assembly. His resignation was accepted and by election was held on the constituency NA-149. Javed Hashmi, this time contesting as an Independent Candidate, lost the by election.
